How Publix, Sprouts and Walmart Stack Up to the Top Grocery Trends of 2018

In 2018, the most on-trend grocery stores are smaller than the cavernous boxes that were once the industry standard — and offer more organic and fresh foods at an affordable price point.
Grocers built far fewer square feet of space in 2017 compared to 2016, with openings down nearly 29 percent year over year, according to JLL’s annual grocery report, which was released Monday. This year, JLL expects to see smaller, more specialized grocery stores with a big focus on online ordering, whether it’s for delivery or curbside pickup.
“Grocers that saw success in 2017 focused on the shopper experience by offering fresh, healthy and affordable products, elevating brand loyalty through private labels and investing in digital platforms,” JLL wrote.
